The snow has fallen and the studs are on, stay tuned for part three.
The tale of a man, his mind, and the changing world around him.
As usual, we uninsured our car for the semester in an attempt to save money with our limited funds. The old commuter bike was tuned up and prepared for another long cold winter of riding up the university hill and around town.
Since I've been been at UNBC I've done the same thing every year and with this being my last, I was curious about the distance I travel in say.. a month.
Well, I went out and bought a bike computer at the beginning of the month and reset it come September 1st and have been tracking my progress since. Here is an overview of my travels:
Bike Totals for the month of September
285 km traveled
14.5km/h avg. speed.
48.5km/h top speed.
Over 19 hours of riding.
In addition, I was curious to see how much gas I would have used to travel a comparable distance. Here are my calculations:
My 2.2L Chev. Cavalier gets 23 MPG or 9.78 KM/L in the city.
285km divided by KML tells me I used at least 30 liters of gas.
With gas hovering around the one dollar per liter mark that means I saved at least $30.00 on gas, and ~$120.00 on insurance this month. I can also happily know that I saved our collective atmosphere the pollutant emissions 30+ liters of gas produces during combustion. In retrospect, these values are actually quite minimal as I am sure we would have used significantly more gas if the car had been insured due to the ease of use. In addition, we both have used the bus service and had friends pick us up, which in both occasions had the car been insured it would have been used instead.
